Beautiful, Haglund, absolutely beautiful. You are my eyes and ears when I cannot be there in person. Thank you.

Sad i wasn't there but maybe just as well- i cried enough just watching the bows on youtube this morning. He's got to be one of the most beloved dancers of all time. Thank you for the great write up! Hoping angel has great success with barcelona ballet & that they will be visiting NY again soon.

Ps- you missed someone on your list of principals at the beginning ;)

Yikes!

Fixed.

:)

Beautiful tribute to Angel, and to ABT's leading men. Thanks for sharing, Haglund. And how nice to hear that Carmen was on the Met stage again, even briefly.

I was not there, but heard the performance was beautiful.

My friend called and said that Jared Matthews was incredible last night as Von Rothbart and that his acting was wonderful too! He really owns that role.

Angel will be missed!!

Hi K and Judy.

Yes, Angel will be missed, but he still has much to give in the coming years. Same with Stiefel.

Judy, you know I love Jared - I flew to Chicago to see his Albrecht. I'm not sure that Von Rothbart is such a good role for him - certainly not as good as Albrecht or even Siegfried would be. It's hard to fill the shoes of Gomes and once Marcelo has done anything, the expectations are high. But Jared didn't do badly. His chemistry with Paloma is good and they came off as quite the conniving pair. It is so ridiculous that we didn't get to see his Albrecht at the Met this year. Just ridiculous.

Marcelo owns von rothbart - hands down. Good luck to anyone else!

I too was sobbing watching the curtain call on youtube, and reading your post, Haglund, couldn't help it. Best wishes to Barcelona Ballet!

Hi lbj. Yes my fingers are crossed for Barcelona Ballet and the whole country of Spain.

Hi Haglund,

I am a huge fan of Jared Matthews and have been for about 10 years. I love seeing him in any role he does with ABT.

I hope he gets the chance someday to do the lead in Romeo & Juliet and Swan Lake with ABT. He & Yuriko were beautiful in Giselle.

Dance is not about perfection, but having heart, and he has boatloads of that quality.

You're so right - Jared Matthews as Romeo.

Jared was terrific as Landkendem in the dress rehearsal of Corsaire today. That guy can really ACT as well as dance. Could we put him on the rack and stretch him instead of Herman, who, I grant you, is perfect the way he is. But I suppose Jared is too.

Angelica, we have to discuss your desire to put men on a rack. LOL. Yes, agree that Jared is a fabulous actor, and we were totally robbed by not seeing his and Yuriko's Giselle this year at the Met. I believe Jared has it in him to pull off Ali. What a damn shame we're having Vasiliev forced down our throats so much. His Ali is as constipated as could be.
