Since ABT is going to include a special week of all Prokofiev music during its spring season, Haglund would like to point out that the delicious Valery Gergiev will bring the Kirov Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre to Avery Fisher Hall for a series of special Prokofiev performances.
November 9, 10, 16, and 17 will cover Prokofiev's Suite from The Tale of the Buffoon, selections from Cinderella, selections from Le pas d'acier, the complete music from Romeo and Juliet, The Love for Three Oranges, as well as concert productions of Ivan the Terrible and Alexander Nevsky.
Then the handsome (". . . like a Wisconsin dairy farmer who woke up and had a beer for breakfast." — Garrison Keilor) Gergiev returns in March to conduct the London Symphony in Prokofiev's complete symphonies.
The New York Times once said that "Valery Gergiev has taken the Kirov Orchestra out of the opera pit and made it into a glorious instrument that, at full throttle, can be almost frightening." Haglund is up for a good scare and plans to attend the complete Romeo and Juliet.
