TIVO the President's State of the Union Address and go see ABT at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday night. How do any of you ever expect to be able to impress Rahm Emanuel without having up-to-date scouting info on America’s national ballet company? Don’t you know that he displays in his office a copy of the 12 lb. coffee table book In Classic Style, the Splendor of American Ballet Theatre accented with a vase of red roses? (Haglund suspects that the President’s Chief of Staff, a former ballet dancer, probably has a little bookmark at page 117 but we’ll never know for sure.)
The performance starts at 7:30. You’ll be out by 9:00 and won’t miss much of the Republicans' sneering or Democrats' twitching around in uncontrolled embarrassment.

If you just have to be at the Capitol or can’t miss the broadcast Wednesday night, go see ABT on Tuesday night. Then you can grab Rahm by the arm after Wednesday's speech and say, “Hey, saw ABT last night. Wow. These guys are good.” Okay, he might tell you to “F___ off” but he’ll respect you more for supporting the ballet. Or, he might even say , “Yeah. I was there, too. Gomes is one of our guys.” In that case, you want to be able to know what he’s talking about.
