Wow, this is great news with exciting possibilites. According to this article in the NYT, we got ourselves a brand new homegrown music director at New York City Ballet.
Andrew Litton, the current music director of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the current music director of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway, the former music director of the Dallas Symphony, native New Yorker who grew up attending NYCB performances, dated one of its dancers, and attended Juilliard is coming home to the Upper West Side.
The NYT forgot to mention that he's a Grammy Award winner, too, or that he was knighted by the King of Norway. Now NYCB will have two Norwegian knights on staff: Maestro Litton and guest teacher/former dancer Espen Giljane. And then there's the Danish knight who runs the place. We see potential for a new Ratmansky ballet called Scandinavian (K)Nights.
Get this, Maestro Litton wants to get NYCB Orchestra a record contract. How cool would that be? And why stop there? They should have their own record label just like the Mariinsky Orchestra.
NYCB has a Grammy-winning, homegrown, major symphony orchestra conductor as its new music director!
