Couldn't agree more about Lea Fleytoux. What a knockout. Her solo was absolutely the best part of the Saturday matinee of Shades.

Greetings, Haglund. Your coverage of ABT's fall season is much appreciated since for a variety of reasons we had to abstain from attending. Bravissima to Christine S whose
Gamzatti some years back remains unforgettable. Here's hoping "Bayadère" is given this summer with her Nikiya. That would be perfect casting. I confess I have never seen the object cast as the snake that does Nikiya in give anything like a convincing performance.

Eulalia, the snake knows it's a bit part. Some years ago after the snake unconvincingly did its deed, the Head Fakir (who I recall might have been Radetsky) grabbed it and as he rushed off stage decided to bite the snake's head off. Just another great memory from La Bayadere...

I must say the pairing of Cate Hurlin with Jared Curley completely changed Neo for me, having seen Isabella Boylston and Jared in it the weekend prior (Whiteside having had to pull out due to an inured calf). It may have been the change of partner on such short notice, but I thought Cate was much more playful and there were so many moments of levity and literal laughter for the audience - it was so much fun.

Misseldine and Bell in the Sylvia Pas were also great. Chloe is definitely living up to her promotion as her rep expands.

I agree, Rachel, about Hurlin and Curley. The other cast that I saw (Boylston & Whiteside) was less playful and more effortful. There might have been some illness/injury issues that came into play on that night, though.

Thank you for this coverage! I saw Christine S. perform for the first time this season, and wow. Was I impressed! Such strong technique. I also enjoyed watching Misseldine and Roxander, both living up to their reputations!

Does anyone know whether the rather right angle of the hand to the wrist when in fifth and fourth with the arms is part of the choreography of Balanchine's Sylvia Pas? I noticed Chloe doing it and she's such a technician it is hard to imagine it was not intentional.

I don't know, Rachel, but I imagine there's an effort to be stylistically truthful as interpreted by Marina Eglevsky. It wouldn't have been right, for instance, to apply Ashton's Sylvia style to Balanchine's choreography (or vice verse). Balanchine's port de bras style includes more acute angles and less roundness than more traditional styles. However, early videos of Maria Tallchief reveal a more fundamentally classical port de bras without extremely fussy wrists.
